This was a delightful ride with only one deficit - it’s awkward to get in and out of because the glider is suspended from cables and moves easily, plus it hangs higher than an average step off the ground. Another feature is that the gliders, though small, can hold two riders, so a parent can fly with a child or siblings can share the experience. A large handle allows riders to move the glider’s sail from side to side, which changes the airflow and makes the plane fly higher, dip or maintain its position as it turns at up to 35 miles per hour around the center pole. This ride is modeled after the traditional rotating swing ride, but with a twist: Instead of swings, riders sit in gliders and can control some of their planes’ movements. The Surfside Gliders reside on the other side of the pier. This is a good ride for families, as it’s not too scary for kids, but it is not for the easily queasy. Riders are pushed to the outer edge of the seat as the cars run through a double circular pattern. On the left is the classic Pacific Scrambler, which makes riders feel they are being moved around by a mixer. The Knott’s Boardwalk area captures the feel of a shoreline pleasure pier with a summer color palette and a wooden walkway leading to two rides. All three, plus a refurbished log ride, were launched last week, just in time for summertime visitors. The trains are painted gold, silver, and copper. The ride is a double out and back pattern.
